"John Wick Chapter 4" officially opened with a bow at the time of its London premiere on Monday night, with the social media reactions embargo lifting during the event.

The fourth entry picks up following the end of "John Wick Chapter 3 - Parabellum," which saw Keanu Reeves' infamous assassin fall from atop the Continental Hotel after being betrayed by his ally Winston (Ian McShane). In all likelihood, Wick lives. "Chapter 4" finds the deadly pariah traveling the globe in search of freedom from the oppression of the devious and brutal High Table.

The critically-acclaimed action film has received a lot of praise from the first round of reviews particularly for its extensive bench of sparring partners that include Donnie Yen, Hiroyuki Sanada, Marko Zazor, Scott Adkins and Rina Sawayama. Another central topic of opinion is the film's runtime of 2 hours and 49 minutes- 38 minutes longer than the previous film's.

Los Angeles Times critic Katie Walsh loved the film, praising its visuals as an improvement over other franchise blockbusters. She added the caveat the one aspect she disliked about the film: "Because it's dumb."

Collider chief editor Steven Weintraub had nothing but praise for the film. He also indicated that Reeves engages in some shady things with a dragon's breath shotgun.

CinemaBlend Critic Eric Eisenberg expressed some reservations regarding the film's lengthy duration. However, he claims that this film "earns it" with "smart pace" and some strong sets.

John Wick: Chapter 4 director and franchise creator Chad Stahelski explains why he plans to step back from the franchise before starting work on the next chapter. Stahelski started the career path as a stuntman in Hollywood acting as a stunt man before teaming up with star Keanu Reeves for the 2014 film John Wick. Stahelski would co-direct the film alongside David Leitch, before solely in charge of the subsequent three sequels. John Wick was a surprise both financially and critically.

A conversation with /Film, Stahelski discusses his plans for the next chapter of the franchise in advance of John Wick: Chapter 4's theatrical release. He shares that he feels it's time to take a break from the franchise before continuing the Wick story. In the meantime director Stahelski has said that he may not direct the next John Wick 5 film, saying, "I'm always saying, "This is my last film and this won't ever happen again.' So, I'll tell you now this is my final one." For reasons why he believes that a break is needed, Stahelski says:

While Stahelski wants to move on from John Wick's reluctant journey through the criminal underground, the franchise is set to grow with the Ana de Armas-led spinoff, Ballerina. John Wick Chapter 4 stream between John Wick: Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 of John Wick Parabellum as well as John Wick: Chapter 4, Ballerina explores the story of de Armas' Rooney, who sets out on her own journey to seek revenge against the murderers of her family. In the meantime, de Armas is taking over the role from Unity Phelan, Reeves, Ian McShane, Lance Reddick, and Anjelica Huston are all set to take on roles they played in earlier installments in the franchise.

After his work on John Wick: Chapter 4 and the other chapters of the franchise, Stahelski is set to utilize his talents as a director to new worlds beyond the high-stakes gunplay Reeves the master assassin. The year 2021 is when Stahelski was tapped by the company to make a film adaptation for Ghosts of Tsushima the most popular 2020 PlayStation video game where Samurai fights for the island of Tsushima during the initial Mongol attack on Japan. The director is also expected to create a new version in the Highlander franchise in 2021, with Stahelski stated that he had a vision of his take on the war between immortals as an entire trilogy of films.

John Wick: Chapter 4 is among 2023's most eagerly anticipated films of 2023. In this regard, although there could be some disappointment over the possibility of a break between installments, it is obvious that the reasons given by Stahelski can be helpful for future films. Additionally, with the director's future projects swapping firearms for swordplay the lessons Stahelski teaches with Ghosts of Tsushima and Highlander will allow for thrilling fight scenes in future films.
