It was a catastrophe London has never experienced before, starting with a fire in an East End bakery on July 1666.



The flame quickly spread and continued to burn for days, engulfing cities in swathes and destroying thousands of homes.



The players are now able to get an in-person view of the Great Fire of London, thanks to a variety of specially-designed maps that can be played with the popular game Minecraft.

MINECRAFT FIRE MAPS



The Museum of London has produced the Minecraft maps to commemorate 350 years since the blaze started.



Players can take on the blaze city through a series of mini games.



The second map, due to be released in the coming months will detail how the fire began and spread throughout the city.



Players will be able to relive the Great Fire through a number of mini games as flames burn through the blocky world around them.



By playing as a journalist from the London Gazette, whose offices were destroyed by flames on the second day of the fire, players will choose which household items to save.

The second map that will be released next month , shows how the fire spread throughout the city starting with Thomas Farriner's bakery (pictured).



Players will be able to experience the Great Fire through a number of mini games. They will be able to join fire fighters battling the flames using traditional tools that are used in the trade, such as recreations of the 17th Century fire truck (pictured) and leather buckets



They can then explore diverse terrains, such as caves and forests. MINECRAFT BLOG They can also fly in the air to get an aerial view of the surrounding landscape.



With the Oculus Rift, now available, players can enter virtual reality.



Joshua Blair, digital learning coordinator at the museum said: 'The very first map of the Great Fire 1666 series has allowed us to really make the players feel part of the history and culture of London in 1666, re-creating the narrow streets, wooden structures and iconic landmarks such as St Paul's Cathedral and London Bridge to create the setting for the fire.'



He added: 'This new map is where the Great Fire story really unfolds and we hope that players will enjoy getting to grips with this pivotal moment in London's history in a fun and entertaining way.' Gaming blog



According to the creators the mini-games draw in historical figures including King Charles II, Thomas Farriner - whose bakery was the one that ignited the fire - as well as famous diarist Samuel Pepys, who documented the blaze.



The museum's Great Fire 1666 exhibit which runs through April 2017, includes the game.



The new maps will be available for download on Mac and PC starting 2 September.
