If you've been thinking about how you can play Minecraft with your gaming buddies who own an Apple TV It's time to get excited. The latest update to the Apple TV version of this popular game allows "Realms," Minecraft's subscription-based multiplayer system. This updated version also features Xbox Live authentication support, which allows players to access their linked avatars as well as character skins.

When you purchase a Realms account, it's like buying an actual Minecraft server, but it's maintained by Microsoft which means you don't have to worry about things like hosting or IP addresses. You are in control of who can access your private Minecraft Realm as well. There's no need to worry about strangers visiting your Minecraft Realm and ruining it while you're building crazy recreations of King's Landing in Game of Thrones. You can purchase either a 10- or two-player Realm of your own for $3.99 and $7.99 for each.

Unfortunately, owners of existing Realms subscriptions on Mac, Linux or PC won't be able play alongside their iOS or Apple TV brethren; there are two separate Realms systems that include PCs and one that supports iOS, Android and Windows 10 users. We've been in touch to find out if there are plans to connect the two systems.

The procedurally-generated worlds of Minecraft deserve to be explored with others; now Apple TV and iOS fans have a chance to do just that... as long as they stick to their own platform.
