The Benefits of Making Your Own Minecraft Server

Minecraft servers let you play the game either online or in a local network. It's like an individual game, which you can customize to your liking. It's yours to create as you wish.

There are lots of benefits to making your own server. For one, you have full control. You can use any mods you want to customize your gameplay. If you are looking to start your own YouTube channel, creating a unique environment using these tools can be very beneficial.

It doesn’t have to be only you. You can build a community by having your own server. Invite others to join you in-game and participate in a multiplayer adventure. If you'd rather keep to yourself, you can still share your custom designs with the world.

To top it all off, creating your own Minecraft server can be a pretty painless experience. It's possible to make it as simple as possible. With a little bit of guidance, you'll have your own space up and running in no time.

Why You Should Use DreamCompute for Your Minecraft Server

Server hosts are a broad topic. They may seem similar at first glance, especially for those just starting out. However, there are some important differences to be aware of before you make your choice.

The first thing to look for in a host is whether it offers a cloud-based server. These servers don't use up your computer's resources and are generally a better choice to traditional local servers. This typically means smoother, better gameplay.

If you are having trouble navigating the cloud server, technical support might be more helpful than with a local server. You won't have any need to worry about your computer being down for other servers who may want to access it.

Our DreamCompute service offers cloud servers for Minecraft with competitive features. It can be used for simple or complex configurations and offers impressive speeds for all users. It has a simple and predictable billing system that will prevent you from getting any unpleasant surprises at the end.

It can also be adapted to your needs if you need to modify any aspect or account. Any alterations that you require will be met with the necessary support.

If you already know you're looking for premium performance and control, you might want to check out DreamHost's dedicated server option. It offers impressive benefits, such as fully-managed, cross-platform cooperative play. However, if you're just looking for a basic server setup, we've got you covered there too.

How to Make Your Own Minecraft Server with DreamCompute (In 3 Steps)

Once you have all the resources you need, just follow these three simple steps to create your own Minecraft server.

Step 1: Create Security Group

The first thing to do is create security groups. This is a set of rules that define network access and will allow or prevent traffic into your Minecraft server according to your preferences. Adjusting some settings is all that's required.

To get this started, navigate to your DreamCompute dashboard and click to expand the Network option on the left-hand side.

Next, click the Security Groups link and then choose Create Security Group. You will be able to enter a description and name. This walkthrough will use "Minecraft" to do both, but you are free to create your own.

Once you've completed filling in the fields click on Create Security Group. To move on to step 2, You will then be presented with the option to create rules and join this group.

Step 2: Manage Your Rules

To manage rules, click the Manage Rules button in the far right. Next, select Add Rule to open the screen.

There are many options on this page but you don’t have to worry too much. You can use this page to quickly get your server up and running.

In particular, we recommend choosing Custom TCP Rule in first field, Ingress second and Port third. Enter the number "25565", which is Minecraft's default port, under Port.

Next, make sure the bottom two fields are set to CIDR and "0.0.0.0/0" respectively. Once you are done, click the Add button.

Step 3: Create a Virtual Machine or VM

Virtual Machines (VMs) are required for the final step. Anything that uses Java will suffice. For this walkthrough, we'll be using Ubuntu-14.04; we recommend it if there's a question. ebookmarks

After that, you can navigate back to DreamCompute's dashboard. Next, click on Instances in the Compute menu. Next, click on the Launch Instance button at the top right. This will bring up the screen below:

Don't be overwhelmed by all the options. There are only some that you will need. In the top field, under Instance Name, enter your server name. We used "My New Minecraft Server," but you can name it anything you like.

Click Next to continue.

Choose Ubuntu-14.04. If you're having difficulty finding it, you can use the search function. To move your selection into Allocated, click on "Up Arrow". To ensure that your instance is not running out of disk/storage space, increase the Volume Size to 10GB and click Next to continue to the Flavor section.

You can also use the search function here to find a specific 'Flavor' you're looking for. The Lightspeed option is recommended if you aren’t sure which option is best for your needs. It boasts 4GB of RAM, making this a solid choice.

Next, click the up arrow next your Flavor choice to move it into Allocated. Click on Next until you get to the Security Groups section.

This section is easy. Simply click the arrow next the Minecraft security groups we have created, and it will be listed under Allocated as shown above.

Click on Next to get to the Key Pair section. If you've already imported Key Pairs into DreamCompute, you can use the arrow to assign them to your instance. Otherwise, use the "Create Key Pair" button to create a new Key Pair and then assign that Key Pair to your instance (this is used for emergency connections and for making additional adjustments to the MineCraft server).

This should be all that is required before you can move on to the Configuration section.

You'll now be taken to a page that has a blank field called Customization Script. On it, you can copy and paste the below code:

You can also download the script from a file. However, you might find that the copy and paste method is quicker and easier.

Keep in mind that Java uses the -Xms512M/-Xmx2G portion of this code to determine the minimum and maximum memory for the Lightspeed flavor. It may not be compatible with other Flavors.

After entering that code, click Launch Instance. Sit back, relax, and give your server a few minutes for the setup process to complete. Your server will now be online and ready for use!

To add your new server to your client, you can open Minecraft and click on Multiplayer > Add Server. You can name it whatever you like and enter the IPv4 address from the VM you created earlier.

If you want to modify the default server settings, you can log into your server via Secure Shell (SSH) as "ubuntu." This will allow you to access the server.properties file, where you can modify the message of each day, spawn other creatures, adjust maximum number of players, etc.
