Jason Momoa is in final negotiations to star in Warner Bros. live-action Minecraft film, the studio confirmed Tuesday.

Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre) will direct the film, which is based upon the 2011 videogame. Momoa also starred in the Warner Bros. movies Aquaman and Dune. The Minecraft news was previously reported on by The Hollywood Reporter.

A Minecraft movie was first revealed to be in the works at Warner Bros. more than eight years ago. The original release date for Minecraft was March 4, 2022. However, that date was delayed indefinitely due to the pandemic. It has not been updated.

Minecraft is one of the most popular games ever. It allows players to explore 3D worlds, where they can build structures, extract materials, and craft items. The live-action movie will join a number of video game-based movies, such as Uncharted, Sonic the Hedgehog (and its sequel), and 2021's Mortal Kombat.

Vu Bui (Mojang Studios' Minecraft developer) is among the film’s producers. Mary Parent and Roy Lee are also producing, and Jill Messick, who worked on the film before her death in 2018, will receive a posthumous producing credit. Cale Boyter and Jon Spaihts are the film's executive producers. Jon Berg is also a producer.
